Excerpt from Used Release Date 1/19

“I really don’t understand what you see in a slut like me, Greer.” His eyes flash, but I don’t let him argue with me. “But I am grateful.” And on that note, I bring his lips to mine. It’s been so long since we’ve tasted each other. We’ve been “seeing” each other for two weeks. Sweet, platonic dates that have ended with a sexually frustrated Denver.

I moan the instant our lips meet. I meant it to be a quick, reassuring, friendly kiss, since we agreed to refrain from that physical side of our relationship for a while, but my body has other ideas. She knows who’s been responsible for her pleasure in the past, and she wants some of that now.

Threading my fingers through his curls, I pull him in and shift my mouth, fitting my lips to his. My tongue darts out to tease his bottom lip, and he opens for me. “Oh, Greer,” I murmur before teasing him lightly. He’s so wet and so delicious. His now hard length rests against my thigh, and I groan. Oh, I want him. I want him now. “Greer, I want you,” I whisper against his lips before kissing him lightly. “Have you been with anyone else?” I screw my eyes tight because I hope not, but I would understand—we all have needs.

He stiffens against me for a second before he whispers gruffly, “Hell, no. Denver, you’re it for me, you know that.” His tongue tangles with mine, searching, destroying. He pulls back and utters, “I want you too. So bad.”

“Let’s go somewhere,” I coax. “There are lots of little trails for us to go get lost on.”

“Mmm … how ‘bout I make you feel good right here?” He nips at my bottom lip. “Right now?”

“What?” I breathe through my haze. “We might get caught.” He recaptures my lips with his and works me over with his tongue. Suddenly I’m reminded of the time we sneaked off during our prom. Oh my God. It was … mind-blowing. The thrill of getting caught. The thrill of our dates waiting for us in the ballroom of the hotel while we fu*ked each other hard, up against a wall in the housekeeping closet. Yes, please. I want that.

I’m jerked from my thoughts as he pulls me from the truck bed. I latch my legs around his waist, not certain where we are going, but along for the ride, nevertheless. He doesn’t take me far. His truck is farthest from the little party on the creek. He doesn’t open the door though. Just pins me to the truck and lets me slide down, drops one of my legs, and pulls the other high on his hip. He nudges my free leg between his and squeezes me tight.

“You ready? Hold on,” he commands before I can answer.

“What? What are you doing?”
“Trust me,” he says, as he buries his mouth in the hollow of my throat. His hands slide into my back pockets, grasping and squeezing. “We promised. No touching like that. No sex. Even though I can’t wait to be inside you again, this is gonna have to do.” He drops his forehead on mine. Those fiery eyes meet mine, igniting a blaze. “The best non-fu*k fu*k of your life.” And those words douse it with kerosene, creating an inferno. A tremble works its way through me, and I almost come right then.

Who's using who?

Meet Denver
“She’s, at best, a fuck buddy. However, I prefer the term ‘whore.’ Fuck buddy is far too nice a term for her,” a catty voice cracks from behind me.
I take a deep breath and look up at the ceiling, saying a little prayer that maybe the venomous voice isn’t referring to me. I thought I’d left all that behind in Anaconda. We’d been here for all of three days, so it’s highly probable they’re not talking about me, right?  Looking back down, I continue pouring Jack in my Solo cup, surpassing the line that is recommended for liquor.
“Yeah, so apparently, she’s got some serious issues and doesn’t ‘do’ relationships. So, she puts out for her guy friends whose girls are too good to give it up. That’s her idea of a relationship.”
“Really? That’s kinda gross,” I hear the other girl mutter.
Sonofabitch! I groan. Yep, they’re talking about me. I splash a little Coke in my cup and stick my finger in it to stir it around a little. I feel tears spring to my eyes and berate myself for still having feelings and giving a shit what people think about me. Years of dealing with this crap should have made me immune, but I’d really hoped college would be different. And how the hell do they even know about that shit? Strengthening my spine, I turn and give them a beguiling smile, which causes them both to blanch. Yeah, bitches, you’ve no idea who you’re dealing with.
“Ladies,” I say with a quirked eyebrow. Removing my finger from the drink, I place it in my mouth and suck off the excess. With a pop, I release it. “I see my reputation precedes me. Well, let me just reassure you that I’m very good at what I do. When you won’t give it up for your guy, he’ll be looking me up, and I’ll be more than happy to take care of him. No questions. No strings. Just lots of meaningless … hot … sex.” I peer around them with a searching look. “Are they here? Your boyfriends?” I look back at them innocently. I almost snort at their mutual expressions of surprise and disdain. “Or,” I continue, “are the sticks up your asses enough so that you don’t need a man?” Both of their mouths drop on that line. Yep, gets ‘em every time. “Oh, no judgment here,” I vow. “I totally get not wanting to be tied down to any one Dick … or Tom … or Harry.”

Will the ties that bind them be their undoing?

My Thoughts:

When Celeste's husband passes away, the first person to step in to help Celeste and her three boys, is Adrian. Adrian just happens to be her deceased husband's, cousin, and black sheep of the family. He becomes a constant in their lives, and Celeste can't imagine life without him. She also knows that anything beyond their friendship would be impossible, because of who both of their families are.

"I know I'm not supposed to want him. He's my own slice of forbidden fruit."

One night.. changes everything. A stolen kiss, a "mistake", sends Celeste and Adrian for a loop. They quickly try to forget it happened, and make sure their current arrangement doesn't change. Friends, that's all they can be, friends who spend a ton of time together, friends who love eachother.. as friends.

"I know he cares about me and my children. He's been absolutely amazing to us since my husband passed. Could he see me as more than just a friend?"

But their emotions may prove to hard to get past. Especially when they keep finding each other testing limits, of emotion, and of boundaries. This brings everyone involved into a terribly tough situation. Can they both find a way to defy their families and be together? Is it worth it? How will the boys react? What kind of retaliation from the Family are they really facing?

And what do they do when a couple of crazy curveballs come flying at them?

And where do they go when a heartbreaking, true to life, situation hits them hard?

"It killed me. Killed me. I've never wanted a woman the way I want you. Never."

The story of this book is fantastic. Mother of 3, widowed, cue amazingly amazing cousin of husband to help her, then add in 3 of the cutest sons ever, I'm on it! Everything I've Never Had has a bit of a slow start, and I was wondering when something major was going to happen. But the second half made EVERYTHING worth it. A lot of what I was confused about, or was just mentioned in passing, gets explained further down the line.

Adrian goes above and beyond for Celeste and the boys, and they truly FULLY appreciate it. Those three boys made this book for me. They are funny, honest, brave, loving, and add so much to the story. They had me tearing up towards the end of the book with how accepting and adorable they really are. I haven't found a book until Everything I've Never Had, where the children involved throughout, to the point they really make the story even better. I think it's hard to integrate children in a genre such as this, and have it work out this well, and in that aspect Lynetta Halat nailed it.

Favorite Quote:

"And the things you make me feel - I thought I'd never been free to feel, so I don't regret us. I'll never be sorry for loving you.

Excerpt
—Everything I’ve Never Had by Lynetta Halat—
Sept. 2013
I consider exactly how truthful I should be with him. He was so truthful with me. I owe him that much, don't I? "Adrian, I don't need time apart. You're my friend and you're amazing with the boys. They love you. I would never deny them your presence. I just...I just need us to get back to normal as quickly as possible. I...I am attracted to you. I have been for a while. But that's all it is—a physical attraction." On these words, I see his eyes narrow ever so slightly. I turn my head quickly and vow, "I promise to control myself, though." I allow my eyes to find his again. "I don't want to lose you either."
He studies me for a minute. Just as I find myself about to squirm under his intense gaze, he releases me. "OK, Celeste, that settles that. Back to normal. We'll both behave. This physical thing between us will pass. No harm, no foul. Right?"
"Right," I say on a smile.
Standing up, he turns to go back to his mowing; but then he spins around and comes back to tower over me. My head flies up, my gaze searching. I open my mouth to ask him what's wrong, but he beats me once again.
"Celeste, just so you know," he says as he tilts my chin back further and runs his calloused fingertips up my cheek to tuck a strand of errant hair behind my ear. His hand curls itself along my jaw. "That kiss...that kiss was exceptional, and I'll never forget it. As I stand here and as long as I live, it was the best I've ever had, the best I could ever have."
Since my heart has lodged itself firmly in my throat, he's gone before I can speak or even form a coherent thought for that matter. Slowly, I shake my head at his retreating back. We'll never get back to normal if he keeps touching me and talking to me like that.

Blurb:

Reader Beware: If you're not OK with having your guts ripped out and are not a bit of a masochist when it comes to reading, this may not be the book for you. If you're open-minded and willing to have a life-changing experience even if you have to go through the wringer emotionally, this is definitely the book for you.

What do you do when you realize you were foolish enough to throw away true, unconditional love?

Lorraina Dabney turns her back on her creativity and tumultuous upbringing to embark on a college career that will lead her to law school and to becoming what she values most in life—a controlled, powerful, respected woman. When she stumbles upon her childhood friend's artwork, she feels inspired to reconnect with him and her former self. This onslaught of emotion will send Lorraina in a tale-spin to figure out exactly why she abandoned all that she was, all that she could've been.

Coming from his own chaotic upbringing, Michael falls quickly and deeply in love with Lorraina at a tender age. Even her rejection can't stand in the way of his obsession. When she starts to date other boys, however, Michael finally relents, causing him to spiral further into a world filled with violence, drugs, alcohol, and women. Realizing that this lifestyle will only lead to his further estrangement from Lorraina, Michael sets about to turn himself around before going to get his girl.

Michael Bang will have Lorraina questioning everything.
