A Sliver of Hope by Karla J. Nellenbach Reivew

5 Beautiful Heartbreaking Stars

From Goodreads:

"My twin sister was the only person in the world I thought I’d known inside and out. Apparently, I was wrong.

Twin sisters share a unique bond, one that can't be broken by miles, time, or even death. Hannah and Hope Morton are no exception. When Hope takes her own life, Hannah loses a sister and a best friend, a catastrophe she isn't sure she'll survive herself.

With her family in ruins, Hannah is slowly disappearing, drowning in a sea of misery. Even her wild, energetic best friend can't pull her out of her grief.

Desperate to help Hannah, her brother comes home from college, bringing his best friend Julian along, the first boy to break Hannah’s heart. None of their efforts are enough to pull Hannah off her self destructive path, though. Julian is the only one who can get through to her, working his way into her frozen soul with cocky remarks and genuine love that warms her from the inside out.

As Hannah works to find answers, she continues to uncover new secrets and people that reveal a side of Hope she had never shared with her twin. Alone now, Hannah must make a decision of her own: move on and start a new life with the people she has left, or let the weight of her grief drag her down with her sister."

My Thoughts:

Wow.. I don't even know where to start with A Sliver of Hope. It was sad, heartbreakingly sad, angry, tormented, and beautiful.

When Hannah's twin sister hope takes her own life, we read Hannah's own thoughts day by day for the next two months following.

"You knew what you were doing. You knew who you were leaving behind, and you knew how your desertion would affect us. Yet, you still did it."

This book was written in a way that I haven't seen done. It is a journal. Hannah's journal. At first it starts off as a way for her to cope, to talk to Hope. Her entries are conversations she wishes she could have with her sister. She shows her anger towards her sister for taking her own life, her heartbreak over it, the confusion that she has towards everything. No one saw Hope's suicide coming, not even Hannah, her sister, her twin, her best friend. Hannah, the quieter of the twins, always looked up to Hope.

"You were everything I ever wanted to be."

Hope was the one with the (seemingly) perfect life. The one who was everything to everyone. She was always smiling, always joking around, always having a great time. Hannah makes it her mission to figure out why Hope committed suicide. With everyone worrying about Hannah, her brother and her friends make it their own mission to help her though it all, and prevent her from becoming a ghost of a person.

I wasn't expecting the twists that came along with this book, they added to the story in such an amazing way. While Hannah is looking for answers she uncovers secrets of Hope's that take her completely for a loop.

A Sliver of Hope is an amazing story of love, loss, struggle, and healing. It is one of the most honest reads I have come by in a while. There is no sugarcoating the feeling of her sisters suicide and her feelings towards it. It is absolutely one of the most real and raw stories I have ever read. I highly, HIGHLY, recommend it. Absolutely beautiful.
