The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen Review

From Goodreads:

"There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.

Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.

Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved."

My Thoughts:

An amazingly beautiful story of two broken people, finding solace, in each other.

Callie and Kayden have known each other since grade school, but they never really knew each other.. or talked to each other. Until one night, when Callie is in the right/wrong place at the right time. After Callie walks directly into a situation that Kayden has always kept a secret, and intervenes, she is all he can think about.

"Life is full of luck, like getting dealt a good hand, or simply by being in the right place at the right time. Some people get luck handed to them, a second chance, a save. It can happen heroically, or by a simple coincidence..."

However, Callie, has her own set of skeletons. She has spent the last 6 years trying, and succeeding, in being invisible. But when Callie and Kayden run back into each other in college, there's no keeping Kayden away from Callie. He has to know more about her, even if it goes against every rule he's made for himself. Callie, who always has her guard up, does not easily trust anyone. Her best friend, Seth, is the only male she has trusted in years. But Kayden starts breaking down her walls, even though it means he will actually feel, something he has avoided in his life.

"#43 Face your fears head on and tell them to fuck off."

Callie and Kayden fall into a friendship, and I use the term "friendship" loosely. Whatever they are heading towards, scares the hell out of both of them, but they cannot seem to stay away.

"I think I've been pretty clear on what I want. So it's really up to you. What do you want, Callie?"

Once the barriers are broken between them, there's no turning back. But when both of them are forced to face the very things they are running from, it's not always the perfect ending..

"You make it seem like everything he did doesn't exist."

I read this book pre-blog, but read it again because book 2 (The Redemption of Callie and Kayden) was just released. The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden is a book that has stuck with me since I read it the first time, MONTHS ago. A book that I went to bed thinking about night after night. It leaves off at one of the craziest cliffhangers I have ever read. At the time I first read this, I had no idea when book 2 was to be published.. it killed me!!

I have to say, I actually enjoyed it even more reading it the second time, and that's saying a lot.. because I loved it the first time. And now.. I finally get to see the end of their story..

..on to The Redemption of Callie and Kayden I go!!

Quote that gave me chills:

"In the existence of our lives, there is a single coincidence that brings us together and for a moment, our hearts beat as one."
